Using Fighting Words

This mailing by Colel Chabad, an umbrella philanthropy supporting a network of soup kitchens, day-care centers, dental and medical clinics, camp scholarships, senior centers and other social-welfare projects throughout Israel and the former Soviet Union, is a great example of jolting outer envelope design and copy that gets recipients inside.

The No. 10 envelope is designed in black, red and white colors, with reverse type. The right half of the outer is white, its purity interrupted by vertical streaks of black encroaching from the envelope’s left side, which is designed as though it was haphazardly brushed black with a paint brush. A horizontal stroke of red stands out on the black and in reverse type is the following copy: “The rockets that blasted northern Israel continue to have a devastating impact on thousands of families who have lost everything.”

Below this, in reverse type on the black background is the call, in all caps, “FIGHT BACK NOW … with food, clothing, and shelter!” It’s a great call to action, triggering a mix of emotions that includes anger and a passionate desire to help. The copy beautifully urges recipients to use that passion, that fierce energy, to right the wrongs that have been done and channel it toward good and peace.

In a matter of two sentences, the outer envelope conveys the organization’s mission, who it helps and the services it provides. The weapons are food, clothing and shelter. That they’re so benign, so altruistic, gives the call to fight back even greater potency.

There are other elements in the mailing — a double-sided, 8.5-inch-by-11-inch letter, a 3.5-inch-by-8.5-inch reply device with an epic long ask string that is worth examining, and a folded, glossy lift note that features photographs and a small, four-paragraph letter — but the outer envelope is the stand-out.

THIS MAILING is available in digital form at the special price of $24.95. To order it, click on the package to be directed to our order form that contains other special offers on Archive mailings.

“You’ve heard of the Seven Deadly Sins … now let Denny Hatch introduce you to the Seven Key Copy Drivers That Make People Act! Successful advertising appeals to the wants and needs of our “hungry hearts” – and he reveals (in juicy language) the reasons why a product or service will uniquely meet those needs. Denny’s book provides not just the how-tos, but also the proven-winner examples. It’s a creative marketer’s treasure trove!”

- Susan K. Jones, professor of marketing at Ferris State University and direct marketing consultant and copywriter, Susan K. Jones & Associates

Twenty-five years ago, Denny Hatch pioneered the study of direct response copy. He started collecting direct mail packages and tracked those that came in over and over again.

Today, the Who’s Mailing What! Archive (www.whosmailingwhat.com) contains pure marketing gold—nearly 1,000 Grand Control mailings in more than 200 categories that were received continuously over three or more consecutive years.

What do these hugely profitable mailings have in common? They rely on the seven key copy drivers:

Fear – Greed – Guilt – Anger
Exclusivity – Salvation – Flattery

These are the emotional hot buttons that make people respond—order goods and services, donate money to charities and send for more information.

“Only Denny Hatch could put together a book like this. “The Secrets of Emotional Hot-Button COPYWRITING” delivers a double-whammy. It’s loaded with creative rules that not only make sense but, as Denny presents them, are easy to implement. And it’s chock-full of examples, some of which most of us have heard about but have never been able to see. Thanks, Denny. We owe you.”

<right>—Herschell Gordon Lewis, copywriter of several long-standing control mailings (such as Omaha Steaks and Red Cooper) and author of “On the Art of Writing Copy” and“Internet Marketing Tips, Tricks, and Tactics”</right>
