Notes from the Newbie

2

In November, I transitioned into the position of managing editor of FundRaising Success  after serving as managing editor of sister publications Book Business and Publishing Executive. As with any change, professional or otherwise, it has stirred a mix of emotions — the excitement of tackling the new, the sadness of leaving behind the old, the difficulty of approaching various challenges along the way. One of the biggest of those has been learning this new (to me) world of nonprofit fundraising, especially after being immersed in other industries for many years.

Except for a brief stint as a grant writer, this is my first foray into the nonprofit world, and I will be the first to tell you that I have lots to learn. Surely, my blog posts will reflect that, but I look forward to your input and comments as one way to become better acquainted with each of you and the sector as a whole.

So being the newbie that I am, I'd like to end my first Outrageous Hope blog post with a question to you, our readers: What is the one thing that you would tell a newcomer to this industry about fundraising? It can be an issue that is most pressing in your mind, or the main thing that motivates you to continue doing the good work that you do. Whatever it is, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Remember, it's always about the donor. Not you. Not the organization. The donor!

The most important thing is to stay focused on the mission of the non-profit. One can easily get lost in day-to-day tactics that make the job seem no different than a standard corporate office job. Periodic mental refreshers on the mission of the organization reminds you why you chose to work in non-profit.
