Synchronizing Online and Offline Fundraising for Better Results
May 18, 2010 From FS Advisor
Some of the best online fundraising campaigns have a strong offline component. Often when people "go digital," they believe they need to direct all of their efforts to the online world. We find this is not always the best way to maximize fundraising revenues.

Will iPads Prompt New Form of Online Appeals?
May 11, 2010 From Chronicle of Philanthropy

The key to a winning Internet appeal is pretty simple—it has to grab the reader or viewer quickly.

The Web is what  Jakob Nielsen, a prominent Web design experts, calls a "lean-forward" medium.

People lean forward when content hooks them. They do not relax. And if you...

More on Mobile
April 2010 From FundRaising Success

FundRaising Success: How would you define where the fundraising sector in the United States is in regard to mobile giving?

Jim Killion: Mobile giving is in its infancy, but with the dramatic results achieved by the Red Cross with text-to-give to Haiti relief, it is now on most people's radar. In many ways, mobile giving is where what is now often referred to as "traditional Internet giving" was six or eight years ago. And just as Internet giving has taken off in the last decade, so will mobile giving. But the move to mobile will be much faster than the move to Internet giving.

April 2010 From FundRaising Success
Fundraising is, by its nature, a selfless endeavor. The work is all about raising money to help others, and any good fundraiser knows the efforts are all about the donors and the missions. So when fundraisers acknowledge one of their own, it's no surprise for the honoree to credit others for his or her achievement.

Homer Simpson for Nonprofits
April 2010 From FundRaising Success
For too long, nonprofit marketers and fundraisers have decided how to communicate based on thinking grounded in direct marketing and economics. The problem with this approach is that it assumes people are coolly logical and make their decisions about supporting a cause based on a rational, linear thought process. We've laid out the cases for why our causes matter based on facts and numbers.

An Interview With Isabelle Benditte, Director of Development, South Florida Urban Ministries
April 1, 2010 From Last Look
At critical moments in modern Miami history, South Florida Urban Ministries’s executive director and staff members have been at the forefront of social justice advocacy and disaster response. From helping to establish the Haitian Refugee Center in the '70s to the formation of People United to Lead the Struggle for Equality in the '80s, to coordinating a large-scale recovery effort in the wake of Hurricane Andrew in the '90s, this organization has been on the front line seeking to improve the quality of life for all members of our community.

ProSpeak: Adjusting to the New Face of Need
January 5, 2010 From FS Advisor
Not since the Great Depression has our nation experienced such a wide distribution of need throughout all socio-economic levels. It started out as a snowball at the top of the mountain with the subprime mortgage debacle.  But as it continues to make its way down a steep slope, millions of Americans are getting swept up into what amounts to nothing less than an avalanche of personal destruction. Many, through no fault of their own, are losing their jobs, and as a result, are losing their homes, health care, life savings, sense of self respect and more.

Sector Report: Fundraising 2009-2010
January 2010 From FundRaising Success
Lynn Edmonds, president, L.W. Robbins Associates
Loyal donors are being conservative but holding on. Since the spring, we have seen a slight increase in giving in some audiences but not all. And in certain cases, we have been able to reactivate lapsed donors by decreasing the gift asks.

What's in a Name?
January 2010 From FundRaising Success
The scenario had become all too common for Christian Children's Fund. Mike Pressendo's young son had chosen to sponsor a Cambodian child through the Christian Children's Fund Web site. But when the Cambodian affiliate — called ChildFund Cambodia — sent his sponsor package, it immediately caused confusion for the boy. Why, when he had sponsored a child through Christian Children's Fund, was he now receiving information on the sponsorship from another organization?

The Nonprofit Market: A Look Back and a Look Ahead
December 29, 2009 From FS Advisor
Looking back on the year, 2009 can be characterized as a rollercoaster ride for nonprofits. Fearing the worst, the industry so far has seen an 11 percent decrease in donations, according to a September 2009 report by the Charities Aid Foundation and National Council for Voluntary Organisations. This has been especially hard on small organizations, with many of them getting squeezed out by their larger, more national counterparts. At the same time, many charities with similar missions have come together, creating partnerships or merging in order to survive the economic downturn — and ensure the proper support for their causes. Although this has been a difficult time for nonprofits, 2009 has made organizations aware of how they need to shape up.

Easier Said than Done: Fundraising in the Age of Cynicism
December 2009 From FundRaising Success
You might be amazed at how cynical a lot of donors are. I saw that cynicism up close a few years ago: I was assigned to interview donors who were sponsoring third-world children through a well-known religious organization. Again and again, those sponsors told me that the most wonderful thing about being sponsors was discovering that the children they sponsored were real people.

A Grand Gift to the Town From the Man You Cant See
November 16, 2009 From News
TOWNSEND, November 13, 2009, The Boston Globe — People here knew the man drove a silver Jaguar. They knew he lunched four days a week at Cliff’s Cafe, invariably ordering in a barely audible voice: carrot sticks, soup, and a sandwich. On Fridays, he splurged on turkey subs at Townsend Pizza. He lived in the wealthier next-door town of Groton and ran the biggest game in Townsend, a plastic household goods manufacturing company.
