January 20, 2012
From Today in Fundraising
The announcement that Blackbaud has agreed to acquire Convio has certainly made the day more interesting. A surprise to me and most of my colleagues, clients and partners, the press release has inspired more Twitter, e-mail and phone activity than I can remember in quite a while. Nearly everyone has asked the same questions: What will it mean? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

From GIVING 2.0
The nonprofit sector has witnessed an explosion in the number of online application vendors providing products designed to help organizations achieve their mission. From fundraising to e-communication to accounting solutions, there are many vendors vying for the opportunity to help nonprofits harness the power of the Internet. Understanding the benefits of software as a service (SaaS) vs. traditional on-premise software, organizations are faced with the task of selecting the SaaS provider with which to partner. But what should organizations be looking for during the SaaS vendor selection process beyond the usual product feature comparison? This paper identifies the foundational selection criteria for nonprofits to
Making the Most of Your Online Event Fundraising Efforts
October 2008
From GIVING 2.0
Given the current state of the economy, there has been concern among nonprofits about the affect it will have on their fundraising and donations. It is during these times that charities should double their efforts to engage donors and get creative in the ways they seek new donors. Online event fundraising continues to be an effective method to accomplish both of these goals. Since 2000, event fundraising technologies have proven to be an area of growth for many organizations, and multiple surveys suggest that online tools provide more satisfying overall donor experiences. And now, with the fall events season complete, this is the best
Rapid Donor Cultivation: Getting the First Online Gift Faster
October 2008
From GIVING 2.0
As nonprofits escalate their focus on the Internet for fundraising and base-building, there is, increasingly, a recognition that the online channel can be a constituent-friendly, cost-effective means of building relationships and raising money from individuals. New online fundraising programs, however, bring new challenges: * How to acquire new constituents? * How to cultivate this virtual constituent community? * How to produce fundraising revenue (quickly)? * How to reduce the payback period for the program investment? For nonprofits with growing online fundraising programs, there is a similar set of challenges: * How to continue to grow the base? * How to keep program
Data-Driven Campaign Targeting and Stewardship
June 2008
From GIVING 2.0
Online engagement and fundraising tools create a multitude of options for nonprofits to collect data. This data, in its raw form, represents an opportunity to know the constituent more completely and act more effectively. The catch is that the data, although it arrives in great volumes, usually does not come ready to use. One of the most straightforward ways to make sure that you can turn your data into actionable knowledge is to emphasize system integration. As nonprofits adopt more of the available engagement options such as text messaging, social networking, chat and e-commerce, the first data challenge they face is getting all of

How to Get More Donors, More Messages and More Success
May 2008
From FS Advisor
Held in Washington, D.C., earlier this month, the 2008 Kintera User Conference provided organizations with a plethora of useful information, including a formula for effective grassroots engagement. In the session “Grassroots Engagement: More Donors, More Messages, More Success,” attendees were given this formula to help create high impact campaigns: Engagement = (microtargeting + mobilization) x viral. High-impact campaigns require compelling content that targets and mobilizes new and existing constituents, and gives them the means to increase the reach and depth of the campaign. Providing viral-marketing tools for the audience will increase overall engagement metrics. Successful and ongoing engagement requires pushing into the supporter’s “Priority

CRM and Donor Management — The Single View
May 2008
From FS Advisor
CRM has become a vital tool for many nonprofit organizations. It is the tool used to capture the totality of the constituent relationship, and the means to communicate the importance of the relationship back to the constituent. However, not all CRM solutions include donor management. In today’s competitive fundraising environment, having a platform that supports both CRM and donor management is practically essential. Today, systems need to be able to track and manage various types of constituents including donors, prospects, volunteers, advocates, members and event participants. Traditional CRM applications provide basic constituent data. They allow organizations to learn the “who, what, when and how

“It’s not Moves Management for humans where once you have a relationship you’re going to move your donors around like chess pieces. No, no, no! Amazon doesn’t tell me what to do; I tell Amazon what I want to do. Then I let Amazon make suggestions about what I should do.” — Kintera Vice President of Market Strategy David Lawson on the importance of donor-driven relationships, speaking during his session, “Test for Success: Constructing Campaigns for Future Success,” March 20 at NTEN’s Nonprofit Technology Conference in New Orleans.

Viral Marketing and the Basics
December 2007
From FundRaising Success
The Web 2.0 phenomenon has empowered organizations to more easily employ viral-marketing tactics. Constituents can forward messages, advocate and become virtual marketers on behalf of their favorite organizations. But sometimes we can get caught up in the technology frenzy and lose sight of the basics. Below are some best practices to keep in mind when using viral marketing as a fundraising tactic.
The Blue and the Gold (and the Green)

Few universities are as indebted to their alumni as the University of Notre Dame. Case in point: In 1879, when a fire destroyed its Main Building — which at the time housed virtually the entire university — only 35 years after it was founded, it was alumni from Chicago who rallied to raise funds to rebuild it. Their support not only got the university back on its feet, but it also set it on a path of growth that hasn’t yielded to this day.

Trends, by definition, come and go. Some are worth more time and money than others, and some can be just another … well … trend.
Fundraisers don’t have the time or money to spend on just another trend — they need results! For most nonprofits, resources are at a premium, and organ- izations have to figure out how to make the most with the least.
